British Museam Virtual Visit

We usually have a trip to the Birmingham Museum and this was not able to go ahead so we had the next best thing...Year 5 were lucky enough to have a virtual visit to the British Museum, this is the one in London.

Looking at Ancient Egypt we looked at the various aspects within our topic including actefacts that have been discovered and where they would feature on the Ancient Egyptian time line, what would be required within the tombs for the afterlife and also what other major civilisations that the Ancient Egyptians had interacted with... Along side this was a kahoot quiz that pitched both classes against each other.

It was impossible to seperate the teams as both scored full marks within the quiz.

Both classes enjoyed the experience and the information given to them will only help deepen their knowledge of their topic.

Parachutes!

We're looking at forces this term in Science. So far we have managed to identify the different types of forces that act upon objects on Earth.

Today however we focussed on air resistance. And what better way to test air resistance than making parachutes?!

The children carried out two different experiments. Does the material the parahute is made from affect air resistance and does the size and shape of the parachute affect air resistance?

We made parachutes of the same shape out of cloth, paper, card and a plastic bag. We then made sure that we dropped these from the same heights in order to make it a fair test. The results of the experiment showed us that there was very little to no difference between the different material parachutes.

So we moved onto different shapes. The children chose their own shapes to create and tried to keep them to roughly the same size. They found that a triangular parachute was much less effective than a square or a circular parachute.

We looked at the fact that the weight doesn't affect air resistance rather the size and the surface area and had a lot of fun finding this out!

Outdoor Perimeters!

Year 5 have taken advantage of the sunny Winter weather and moved their Maths learning outdoors. We are beginning to look at perimeter and using our previous learning in order to solve problems. The children had to remember the basic properties of shapes as well as being able to define regular and irregular polygons. The children quickly learnt that, in order to draw regular polygons to the correct dimensions, they had to divide the total perimeter by the number of sides. We quickly realised that it would help using a protractor so we can definitely draw a regular polygon. Year 5 loved having chalk and using it to draw the different shapes and we found it was a fun, interactive and effective way to introduce perimeter again.
