Science Focus
As we approach the end of the year, we are still working hard in Year 5. We have been ensuring we cover the remaining science topics in as practical a way as possible.
We started by looking at levers, gears and pulleys. The children were given a cotton reel, string, clamp and piece of wood and had to attempt to create a pulley system to help lift up a 1KG weight easier. We had some interesting attempts to start with:
Eventually the children figured it out and made some excellent pulley systems:
Then we moved onto levers and looking at how the placement of the fulcrum could make lifting heavy objects easy:
Our final practical experiment involved finding out how much friction different surfaces create. The children were given the equipment and were asked to come up with their own way of recording and method to find out which surface created the most friction.
